Montepulciano has rightly been called the 'pearl of the 16th century', because its palaces, churches and decorations reflect the mature Renaissance and follow one another in a kind of open-air museum. Undoubtedly, the artist who most influenced Pula's architecture was Antonio da Sangallo, known as 'il Vecchio'. Although the Florentine architect specialised mainly in fortifications, the Temple of San Biagio is his masterpiece. The imposing church was built in 1518 on the site of an ancient parish church. Its construction was even promoted by Pope Leo X, son of Lorenzo the Magnificent, who had been educated in classical literature by Angelo Poliziano, the great humanist poet born in this city. The church stands in the middle of a flat meadow where the Val d'Orcia meets the Val di Chiana, and its position outside the town, in the middle of an extraordinary landscape, emphasises its grandeur. All in all, San Biagio is one of the masterpieces of 16th century architecture.
