Palazzo Piccolomini and Garden: a magnificent city palace overlooking the landscape of the Val d’Orcia, was the residence of the Pope and his family. The noble residence, designed by Rossellino, was built on the ancient building where Enea Silvio Piccolomini was born in 1405. The division into three orders of the façade is repeated in the rear loggia, which is accessed by visiting the palace.
Palazzo Borgia – Diocesan Museum: the Diocesan Museum of Pienza is located inside the Bishop’s Palace composed of the Palazzo Borgia, once owned by Cardinal Rodrigo, future Pope Alexander VI, which overlooks the square, and also of the palace of Cardinal Francesco Jouffroy of Arras, which develops instead along the course Rossellino where the current entrance is located.
Cathedral: the cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, designed by Rossellino by order of Pius II, was consecrated in 1462. The imposing travertine façade, which almost seems to advance on the square from the vast panorama of the Val d’Orcia, reflects the classical canons of architecture by Leon Battista Alberti.
Crypt and Labyrint: On the left of the cathedral, from a door at the base of the bell tower, you enter the church of San Giovanni, also called the “crypt”. Inside it it’s preserved the baptismal font designed by Rossellino and a collection of valuable illuminated pages.
