Galata Maritime Museum was opened in 2004, when Genoa was awarded European Capital of CultureIt’s the major maritime museum of the Mediterranean Sea and it allows to explore the history of navigation. The exhibition begins on board a Galley, where the “visitor-actor” can explore the Arsenal and find out more about the life of slaves, convicts and the so-called buonavoglia, paid volunteers.
The exhibition goes on with the oceanic crossing of the Italian migrants on board steamers towards North and South America and with a pavillion exclusively dedicated comtemporary migration.
The museum Galata is shipe-oriented rather than people-oriented. A Genoese galley of the 17th century, a brigantine-schooner of the 19th century, the deckhouse of steamer of the beginning of the 20th century, a lifeboat that survived  a shipwreck at Cape Horn. An extraordinary adventure to discover 600 years of life at sea!!
The Nazario Sauro, the largest Italian submarine that can be visited still afloat is moored in front of the Galata Museo del Mare. An integral part of the AcquarioVillage offering, the Nazario Sauro gives visitors a chance to experience the living conditions of submariners aboard a real submarine.
