The history of the dome is ancient and unique. It began in 1418 when a competition was announced for the ideal design of the dome, with a significant prize of 200 gold florins and eternal fame for the winner.

The leading architects of the time came to Florence to present their ideas. Brunelleschi emerged as the winner, and Lorenzo Ghiberti became the co-supervisor. The construction was challenging and faced many obstacles.

The project was deemed impossible by many engineers. On March 25, 1436, during the Feast of the Annunciation, Pope Eugene IV and a group of cardinals and bishops consecrated the completed Cathedral.

The second part of the tour will allow you to discover the buildings that make up the city's religious complex: the Baptistery, the Cathedral, and the Museum of the Opera del Duomo.

With our Certified Guide, you will have the opportunity to admire the stunning Byzantine mosaics on the ceiling inside while, outside, you can see Lorenzo Ghiberti's masterpiece, the east door of the Baptistery, commonly known as the 'Gates of Paradise.'

The guide will reveal the massive cathedral, the Duomo, Santa Maria del Fiore. The final destination of the tour will take us to the Museum of the "Opera del Duomo," where you can admire priceless works from the artistic heritage of the religious complex, including Michelangelo's "Pietà," among others.
