La Pinacoteca : In the rooms of the piano nobile of Palazzo Vallemani, a splendid Baroque residence a few steps from the Basilica of St. Francis, works from the Assisi Municipal Picture Gallery are on display. The residence, with its vaulted ceilings frescoed at the beginning of the 17th century by Umbrian and Tuscan painters, houses testimonies of the political, civil, as well as religious evolution of the city. Among the most valuable works in the collection is the Enthroned Madonna with Child, attributed to the young Perugino.
Il Foro Romano : Assisi preserves many ancient remains, the most important of which is the Forum, located under the current Piazza del Comune and dominated by the Roman Temple of Minerva (1st century BC). In addition to the rich archaeological collection, the remains of the Forum include the basement of the temple, a cistern, a podium with seats for magistrates, and a tetrastyle temple dedicated to Castor and Pollux.
La Rocca Maggiore ( momentaneamente chiusa per restauro ): reached from Via Porta Perlici, it is probably built on an ancient urban settlement dating back to the 4th-3rd century B.C. and stands out on the Asio hill overlooking the city of Assisi.
The fortress has a trapezoidal shape with angular towers. Inside is the Maschio, from the top of which there is an extraordinary view of the city and the valley, from Perugia to Spoleto.
Exhibition: “CARLOS GARAICOA. Ascoltare il volo degli uccelli.”
Carlos Garaicoa's work has developed and contributed to a dialog between art and urban space, which subsequently examines the social structure of our cities in terms of architecture and the use of space. His work spans many different disciplines while addressing issues related to culture and politics through a Cuban and European lens. His main subject has always been the city of Havana, where he was born, grew up and studied. Now living and working in Madrid, his work can be interpreted and applied in many global urban contexts. His sculptures, drawings, videos, and photographs find a way to critique modernist utopian architecture and its associated 20th century ideologies by examining the city as a symbolic space representative of our social fabric.
