ANIMA DI VOLTERRA allows the visit with free audio-guide to the Cathedral, Baptistery and the Ancient Civil Hospital Santa Maria Maddalena with the Exhibition Center of Volterra and is valid for 2 days.

The Cathedral of Volterra, dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta, was consecrated on May 20, 1120 by Pope Callisto II, as a result of a complex expansion of pre-existing religious buildings. The facade has a tympanum adorned with a blind loggia, a large circular rose window and a marble portal with a geometric mosaic lunette made in the thirteenth century with material from the Roman era when the whole structure, according to what Giorgio Vasari reports, would perhaps have been enlarged and decorated by the famous sculptor Nicola Pisano. The interior, divided into three naves, presents a Latin cross basilica in late Renaissance style, the result of several renovations over the centuries.

The Baptistery
The octagonal Baptistery of San Giovanni has been documented at least since 1161. The prospectus in which the access portal opens, is covered by a facing composed of bands of white and green marble, according to the Romanesque-Gothic style, and dated to the thirteenth century.

The Ancient Civil Hospital of Santa Maria Maddalena
The complex of the Ancient Civil Hospital of Santa Maria Maddalena, already attested in the twelfth century, has been the subject of a far-sighted recovery aimed at bringing to light the Etruscan, Roman, and medieval remains preserved there, as well as to host inside a Study Center Exhibition where donations of ancient and contemporary works of art are exposed.
