The Cattolica Aquarium is the largest aquarium in the Adriatic. It is located in an architecturally significant historical complex— a former 1930s marine colony whose design resembles a fleet of ships. The Cattolica Aquarium is home to 3,000 specimens from 400 different species, including Italy’s largest Sand Tiger Sharks, a thriving colony of Humboldt Penguins, as well as otters, caimans, rays, jellyfish, snakes, and other marine and terrestrial animals.
With a ticket, visitors can access four indoor routes, each distinguished by a color: Blue for marine environments, Yellow for freshwater habitats, Green for the reptile house, and Purple for the educational exhibition "Giant Insects XXL Edition." The exhibition features over 70 3D models and exhibits, whose scientific value has been recognized by many Italian and international universities, including the University of Pisa, the University of Padua, the University of Milano-Bicocca, the University of Taiwan, and the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University. The models, enlarged from 20 to 200 times their actual size, allow visitors to explore intricate anatomical details, colors, and the functions of various body parts.
During the warmer months, the ticket also includes access to The World of Dinosaurs, an outdoor area that recreates a prehistoric plain populated by hyper-realistic replicas of the reptiles that ruled the Earth 65 million years ago. These include the fearsome Tyrannosaurus Rex and the massive, crested Spinosaurus, which reaches an impressive 16 meters in length. The area also features a large shaded excavation site where children can unearth prehistoric fossils, just like real paleontologists.
