Caserta, the Royal Palace and Park – ticket.
Listed as one of the Italian UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Royal Palace and its park, are jewels of breathtaking beauty. The Unesco nomination described it as “the swan song of the spectacular art of the Baroque, from which it adopted all the features needed to create the illusions of multidirectional space”
This sumptuous palace, commissioned by Charles III of Bourbon, king of Naples, and planned by Luigi Vanvitelli is one of the largest palaces erected in Europe during the 18th century: 5 floors, 1,200 rooms, including two dozen state apartments, a large library, and a theatre modelled after the Teatro San Carlo of Naples. It is the triumph of the Italian Baroque, which enchants visitors by the beauty of its interiors and by the magnificence of its exterior. Last but not least the wonderful park. It starts from the back façade of the palace, flanking a long alley with artificial fountains and cascades. The park’s jewel is its botanical garden, called “The English Garden”, wanted by Maria Carolina of Austria. It holds a vast range of indigenous and exotic plants alike, including Cedars of Lebanon.
